When I watch videos on YouTube, even if I like a video, I very rarely hit the like button. So when I want to go back and watch one again, I have to scroll through my history to try and find it, and it's finding a needle in a haystack.
So I've been trying to be better about liking videos I like. But, as someone who likes to categorize and organize, the liked videos playlist isn't enough for me. I need specific ones. As of now, the categories I've created are Live Music, Musicals, Sporting Highlights, Funny Haha, Films, and Fave Workouts.
Let me get Fave Workouts out of the way. I've been trying to do exercise videos, to some success, cause I hate going to the gym. I'd rather embarrass myself and get a workout in in the privacy of my own home. This just lets me keep the ones that I actually like in one place, and I add and remove as I find workouts or the ones I'm doing aren't working for me anymore. And Sporting Highlights is obvious, sports clips. I like watching feats of athleticism.
Live Music is pretty self-explanatory. Any live performance. Could be from a concert, could be from a tv appearance or an award show. Just has to be live. This is especially helpful for when artists perform new arrangements of their songs that they don't have a studio version of. Looking at you BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge. Musicals could be theater or movie musicals, it all applies. So it's pretty much full of Tony Awards performances and MGM musicals. The Ryan Gosling "I'm Just Ken" Oscars performance? That qualifies for this list, too.
Funny Haha are any clips that make me laugh. Viral videos, SNL sketches, anything that makes me laugh. This is the one that I feel can get the most out of hand since it could literally be anything. And Films are any films that I can find on YouTube. A lot of it is most likely gonna be what’s in the public domain, but there is surprisingly a lot of them. There may be some others that I can find, too, but shh, I don’t want them taken down.
One playlist category I've been toying with making is a music video playlist. Create my own MTV since MTV doesn't care about music videos anymore. One of the little joys I’ve had lately is putting on MTV Classic in the morning, while I pretend to not be conscious, and it just made realize I don’t watch music videos as much as I used to. I love falling down music video wormholes on YouTube, so maybe I should start collecting them all in one place.
This whole project really just proves how much of a curator I am. I love a library, both online and physical.
